Queensland workers need travel compensation: MP

Independent Gladstone MP Liz Cunningham has vowed to block any moves by the Queensland government to remove compensation for workers who are injured travelling to and from work.

Cunningham met with union members on Thursday ahead of a review into the WorkCover compensation scheme set to be released in state parliament this week.

"No-one wants to see anyone injured at work, but it happens in workplaces of all descriptions," Cunningham said.

"In central Queensland, a lot of workers travel long distances to work by car, and they deserve to be covered."

According to the Gladstone Observer 100,000 Queenslanders suffer from a work-related illness or injury each year, with more than 1200 of those coming from the Gladstone region.

CFMEU Gladstone organiser said Ben Loakes said he understands first hand how important WorkCover is.

Loakes was in a car accident on the way to work when he was 18, and spent nine months in hospital.

"The only thing that kept my head above water was the compensation payment," he said.
