New rail loops a win for road users

Farming lobby group AgForce said the construction of passing loops at Toowoomba range on the Queensland’s Darling Down will take more trucks off the Warrego Highway.

The Queensland Government said it will spend up to $50 million to build the loops, allowing an additional 20 trains paths per week which will enable farmers to get products off the road.

AgForce grains president Wayne Newton says road users will notice a difference when the loops are completed, ABC reported.

"The road is currently carrying a very big proportion of the grain that's exported from Brisbane port and that could go all back on to the rail network and reduce the volume of the heavy transport," he said.

"Those heavy combinations that we see running down to Brisbane."

Newton says it is a big win for grain producers.

"It's good to see the Government being prepared just to spend a little bit of money to get a lot more efficiency out of the system," he said.

"The scale of things – I mean $50 million for a few passing loops isn't a lot of money to spend compared to, for instance, the amount of money they're spending repairing the Warrego Highway at this time."
