Salt truck roll over leaves man injured

A man spent more than half an hour trapped in his truck yesterday after it rolled in Port Hedland, spilling 40 tonnes of salt onto the road.

The 67-year-old unnamed driver suffered injuries to his head and hands and was taken to hospital after being freed by emergency workers, The West Australian reported.

The truck tipped while entering the Port Hedland Port Authority facility on Gilbert Street.

The truck was reportedly carrying around 40 tonnes of industrial grade salt from Rio Tinto’s Dampier Salt project.

A man who was standing close by when the accident happened knocked out the truck's windscreen to give the driver some air.

"The driver was unconscious when we first got there," the man, who did not wish to be named, said.

"There was a bit of blood in the truck and after we got the first window out we heard a few groans, so we started talking to him and he was asking where he was.

"He was very dazed and he couldn't really comprehend where he was or what was happening."
