Trade body appoints head of border and biosecurity

The international transport trade body Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has appointed Andrew Crawford as its head of border and biosecurity, a full-time role responsible for operational support and border policy for the peak body, with the role to commence on 9 May 2018.
Andrew has 37 years of experience in international freight and logistics, completing his customs broker studies at TAFE in 1981 before eventually becoming the CEO of BCR Freight, a major national Freight Forwarder based in Sydney.
“Over three decades Andrew has built a reputation as a strong industry executive and a respected thought leader”, says Paul Zalai, founder & director of FTA, “We’re privileged to have him join the team.”
Andrew’s role will include responsibility for Customs, Quarantine, Office of Transport Security, and other border-related compliance issues. Andrew will also be supporting FTA’s business development activities.
FTA’s growth in the last five years has been substantial, with the industry body now representing more than 400 international trade entities, including some of Australia’s largest importers, freight forwarders and 3PL providers, as well as training over 3,000 industry participants on their training platform.
In late 2016, FTA took on the Secretariat of the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA), while they continue to provide policy and operational support to a number of other international trade associations.
This appointment will further strengthen FTA’s value for members in the customs broking and freight forwarding fields.
“I believe industry representation is vital to the success of our Industry as a whole”, said Andrew Crawford, “and now I look forward to providing the best possible support to FTA members.”
