Peacock Bros. celebrates 120 years

Peacock Bros this year celebrates 120 years of successful business, remaining to this day Australian owned and operated and still run by the original family that started the business back in 1888.

Today, Peacock Bros. boasts branches in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland New Zealand making it one of the largest identification products and supplies companies in Australasia.

Originating as a general printing company that produced products such as binders for general ledgers used for stock control, dental records and real estate listings, Peacock Bros. has consistently spearheaded new technologies that we now take for granted, such as label printers, barcode scanners, RFID tags and automated print and apply systems.

In the 1920’s Peacock Bros. lead the way by introducing Comptometers into Australia.

These large mechanically adding machines were designed for business inventory recording and financial management.

In later years Peacock Bros. established Casio electronic calculators, hailed as a great advancement in technology and speed.

By the late 1960’s the company became the exclusive Australia distributor for Weber Marking Systems, which manufactured carbon stencils functioned as a customisable ink pad for placing identification on product cartons and packaging.

At the time everything was handwritten on cartons.

The stencils increased the speed of this process by as much as 60 times.

In 1982 Weber Marking Systems released the first computer operated dot matrix barcode label printers, with Peacock Bros. remaining as the exclusive Australian distributor.

This opened up a whole new market for barcode labeling and computer based warehouse management.

Later new developments in computer technology, barcode labeling software packages and smarter barcode printers created an increased demand for labeling solutions and barcode identification systems.

Peacock Bros. expanded and grew with this technology and constantly released better identification systems into the Australian market .

Starting with 5 flexographic label presses, the company began to manufacture a range of self adhesive labels and tags to meet the new consumer demand.

Today Peacock Bros. has 13 label presses within three label printing plants located in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland New Zealand.

1987 saw the introduction of the Zebra Technologies brand of thermal label printers.

With Peacock Bros. as an original Australia Partner, the demand and capabilities of labeling systems doubled.

Zebra Technologies trained and certified Peacock Bros. technical staff to provide local customer support here in Australia for their entire product range offering manufacturer backed service, technical support and repairs giving the company a technological advantage within the market.

Neil Crump became Managing Director in 1998 and identified even more business potential and new markets for the company.

Crump facilitated the purchase of two label printing businesses and two data capture companies to expand the scope of Peacock Bros. which today boasts a clientele within an impressive range of industries.

These include: Transport and Logistics, Manufacturing, Food, Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Distribution and more.

“A dedication to research and development of new technologies and smarter solutions for our customers has been the key to our success,” says Neil Crump.

“A perfect example of this is our latest indoor vehicle positioning solution combined with RFID, wireless networking and the latest in warehouse management software called SkyTrax, which is revolutionising warehouse inventory operations and winning awards across the globe.”

“It’s a great testimony that we can produce such a breakthrough on our 120 years anniversary.”
