Darwin Airport makeover set to go ahead

A $60 million expansion at Darwin Airport will double the number of passengers and planes it can receive.

The expansion will add 11,000 square metres to the terminal, include new check-in areas and departure lounges for major airlines.

Construction on three new aircraft bays will start in June, with the project expected to be completed by the end of next year, ABC reported.

Darwin Airport chief executive Ian Kew says the expansion will create a better experience for customers.

"In simple terms we'll be able to handle twice the number of passengers and planes, in any particular busy hour than we can today," he said.

"So this is the biggest development project in the airport's history since it was constructed in 1991.

"We're very excited about it."
