Port of Brisbane has released its Sustainability Report 2018/19, outlining its sustainability progress and achievements for the year.
PBPL CEO, Roy Cummins, said as Port Manager, PBPL was taking a lead role to continue building a more resilient and sustainable port for customers, stakeholders and the broader Queensland community.
“Port of Brisbane is a thriving and growing community, home to over 73 businesses that support thousands of jobs and is the import/export gateway for Queensland and northern New South Wales,” said Mr Cummins.
“It’s also uniquely located in an area of high environmental value, which is why we are focused on minimising our impacts on the natural environment as well as the local community.
“Our long-term Sustainability Strategy was developed following extensive consultation, with more than 350 external and internal stakeholders providing their input to help identify the issues that matter to all of us.
“The strategy aligns to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and reports against the internationally recognised GRI Framework.
“While proud of what we have achieved during the year, we have also identified many opportunities for our business to continue improving and innovating. We’ll remain focused on these, working in partnership with our customers, stakeholders and the community.”
Key commitments and progress for 2018/19 include:
- Zero Lost Time Injuries (LTIs)
- 24% emissions reduction commitment by 2024/25 (on FY18 levels)
- 50% of all PBPL-generated waste is recycled, an increase of 9% (on FY18 levels)
- 77% of all PBPL spend on goods and services is with local suppliers (south-east Queensland)
- Introduction of a Diversity and Inclusion Council
- Approximately $500 million forecast for port infrastructure works over the next five years
- Channel capacity and wharf infrastructure improvements have increased vessel LOA by 13.6% to 350 metres and vessel beam by 11.1% to 50 metres
- 28 community groups and not-for-profit groups received over $255,000 in funding.
Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd’s sustainability efforts were recently acknowledged with a 4-star rating in the globally recognised GRESB survey.
