Distribution centre meets growing demand for pharmaceuticals

National full service construction and engineering company, Ahrens, has been engaged to deliver a new critical storage and distribution centre in Hobart for pharmacy giant Sigma Healthcare, a pivotal provider in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Australia’s pharmaceutical market is a multi-billion dollar industry that has grown steadily over the past decade and maintained its growth, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, with many pharmacies across the country experiencing an increase in demand.

Having completed a $20 million state-of-the-art distribution centre in Pooraka for the client in 2019, Sigma Healthcare has chosen to continue their strong relationship with Ahrens by selecting them as the design and construction specialist to deliver this landmark new facility. This will be Ahrens’ first project in Tasmania.

Sigma Healthcare distributes to over 4000 pharmacies and hospitals across the nation, and own some of Australia’s most well-known pharmacy brands, including Amcal, Discount Drug Stores, Guardian and Pharmasave. To support ongoing growth, they required an expansive distribution centre that could accommodate a higher volume of products via a central location on the mainland to service Tasmania.

The scope of works will include the design and construction of a 4,000m2 warehouse, along with steel erection and cladding, a 350m2 office, a complete fire system, a full office fit-out and completion of all external hardstand and perimeter security fencing.

This project will also engage multiple divisions of Ahrens, working collaboratively to deliver this construction solution, with the Design & Construction SA team being the major contractor, Steel Solutions providing all of the structural steel from their in-house manufacturing facility, as well as Ahrens’ Water Storage division providing all of the necessary fire tanks. The project will be complete in April of 2022.

Proud to be an Australian-owned family business, Ahrens is the most vertically-integrated construction company in Australia with a complete range of in-house capabilities to deliver your next project from concept to completion.
