ALC welcomes government’s Road User Charge

The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) says it welcomes the federal government’s comments on the importance of coordinating a nationally consistent Road User Charge (RUC).

It also says it supports the development of a national RUC system through the National Cabinet process. This will involve investing in transport infrastructure and providing clarity to operators in the freight, logistics and supply chain industry.

“Australia has a national economy, and we need to put in place a fit-for-purpose and nationally consistent RUC system,” ALC’s CEO Brad Williams says.

“The uptake of electric vehicles provides an important catalyst for change, and if we get the reform consistent across the board, it will provide a sustainable source of investment for government to build and maintain safer, more efficient road networks,” he adds.

The ALC notes Simon Birmingham, Federal Minister for Finance said in The Australian that the RUC systems in Victoria and South Australia are “mature approaches” and outlined the need for a sustainable revenue source to build infrastructure.

Brad says it is critical National Cabinet establishes a pathway so a nationally consistent RUC can be developed and implemented across all vehicle classes.

The ALC adds it also outlined the need for a nationally consistent RUC system across all jurisdictions to avoid regulatory duplication in a submission it handed to the Senate Economics Committee.

“A nationally consistent reform will require collaboration between federal and state/territory governments to deliver uniformity for the supply chain,” Brad says.

“Freight knows no borders and inconsistencies with road charging schemes will create confusion and difficulty for those in the national freight and logistics supply chain.”
