Australia Post’s CEO along with the federal government’s ministers for communications and climate change officially opened the postal company’s second largest sorting facility in the country earlier this week.
This new parcel DC in New South Wales will service Greater Western Sydney and its surrounding areas.
Australia Post says the 33,680 sqm Kemps Creek site – which is on 56,000 sqm of land – has been designed with future expansion in mind to ensure it is well prepared to meet the needs of the growing region.
“With the population of the Greater Western Sydney region projected to grow, we’re investing in infrastructure and technology that sets us up to support the ever-changing needs of our communities and our customers,” says Paul Graham, Australia Post Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.
“We are also committed to ensuring our new facilities help deliver upon our 2025 Sustainability Roadmap.”
Together with Goodman, Australia Post notes it has installed a 1500 kw solar array system on the facility’s roof, enabling an estimated carbon emission saving of 1680 tonnes a year.
Electric vehicle charging stations have been fitted and rainwater tanks have been installed to collect grey water and drip irrigation for native landscaping.
The modern, purpose-built facility incorporates processing, pick-up and delivery, as well as transport and linehaul operations, with the planned Western Sydney Airport located only 15 km away.
Housing two large parcel sorters, the facility can process up to 200,000 small and large parcels per day, with the capacity to scale, including by the installation of a small parcel sorter, which will double daily capacity to 400,000 parcels per day.
Designed with a focus on safety, well-being and sustainability, the facility uses the latest sortation technology, enabling increased visibility of customer articles in the network and improving safety by reducing physical touchpoints.
