Maersk’s Hamilton Coolstore has emerged victorious, clinching the Excellence and Best in Category CBRE Industrial Property Award at the Property Council of New Zealand’s annual awards ceremony.
Located within the Ruakura Superhub, the 18,000 sqm integrated cold chain facility, which commenced operations earlier this year, represents Maersk’s largest infrastructure investment in New Zealand, totalling approximately NZD $140-150 million.
“The facility stood out among 13 competitors for having sustainable elements to it, following the trend of putting sustainability at the heart of property development, and for having a massive impact on productivity,” says Andrew Evans, the Chief Judge of the Awards.
“The facility is expected to reduce approximately 6000 trucks annually by enabling freight to be transported directly to ships in Auckland or Tauranga via the inland port, rail, or road.”
The judging criteria included economic and financial, project vision and innovation including degree of difficulty, design and construction, owner and user satisfaction, and sustainability and efficiency of operation.
With a storage capacity for 21,000 pallets of frozen and chilled products, the Maersk Coolstore counts Fonterra, New Zealand’s largest dairy company, among its prominent tenants.
Maersk has collaborated with Apollo Projects for the facility’s design and construction, and TMX Transform provided property advisory and end-to-end project management.
“TMX played a critical role in the Hamilton new build from the outset,” says Robert McLeod, Regional Head of Cold Chain Logistics for Asia Pacific at Maersk.
“From managing design specifications and contractor engagement through to project delivery, all aspects of the program were on schedule and within budget. Driving the program to achieve the best outcome and to satisfy our customers was prioritised by TMX from the start.”
The Property Council New Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industrial Awards are renowned for recognising excellence in property projects, developments, and refurbishments across New Zealand.
