Day one of MEGATRANS 2024 kicked off successfully with the official opening breakfast hosted by the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) on Wednesday, September 18, at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Peter Anderson, CEO, VTA, welcomed attendees with a brief speech addressing the logistics challenges facing the industry and the need to combat them.

He then introduced the VTA breakfast event’s sponsor, Zurich Resilience Solutions and welcomed the the Honourable Minister Melissa Horne MP, who spoke about the Victorian government’s projects such as the West Gate Tunnel – which is scheduled to open in 2025 and will include truck zones – and North East Link.

“My role is to work with the VTA as a facilitator for a sustainable and productive freight sector,” says Melissa while addressing the industry.

“We aim to provide certainty for businesses to invest, support efficient operations, and remove barriers by equipping the next generation of workers. As we refresh the Victorian Freight Plan, we’re creating a shared vision for the future of freight. I appreciate everyone’s contributions during the consultation process; without the partnership between government and industry, your sector couldn’t continue to drive our economy.”

The conference featured a dynamic lineup of sessions with OneStop’s sponsored “Harnessing the Power of an Interconnected Supply Chain” session, which focused on enhancing industry visibility and efficiency. Followed by Toll Group, which focussed on “Creating the Sustainable Fleet of the Future,” where experts discussed decarbonising fleets and the role of advanced technologies.

After lunch, the “Sustainability and Safety in Supply Chain” panel discussed how automation and digitisation contributed to greener, safer warehouse environments followed by the ANL session which focussed on “Decarbonising International Shipping & Transport,” featuring insights on achieving net-zero carbon commitments by 2050.

The session “Issues to Consider When Upgrading Existing Port Facilities” explored the challenges of adapting facilities for multiple products. Finally, ASBSH presented “Reliable Processes and Methodologies for the Design and Optimisation of Bulk Material Handling Equipment,” discussing advancements in simulation tools and their impact on sustainability.

On the sides, the SCLAA Spotlight Conference also highlighted critical discussions on logistics and supply chain management. Industry leaders convened to share insights on key trends, including digital transformation, workforce development, and the role of technology in enhancing operational efficiency. Panelists explored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive innovation and sustainability in the sector.

Sessions covered practical strategies for navigating current challenges and preparing for future opportunities, providing attendees with actionable takeaways to enhance their organisations.

“We are very happy with the turnout,” says Show Director Lauren Chartres.

“This year’s event has exceeded the footfall seen at the last MEGATRANS, which speaks volumes about the industry’s enthusiasm and engagement. We’re thrilled with how packed our conference sessions have been.

“We expect tomorrow to be even better, with more opportunities for networking and learning, and look forward to the MHD Mercury Awards tonight. Prime Creative Media has worked hard to create an environment that fosters collaboration and innovation in logistics, and the positive feedback from attendees is incredibly encouraging.”
