$50m boost to fix Sydney’s “worst roundabout”

The Australian Government has committed an additional $50 million to upgrade the roundabout on Homebush Bay Drive near Sydney Olympic Park.

The Australian Government has committed an additional $50 million to upgrade the congested roundabout on Homebush Bay Drive near Sydney Olympic Park, bringing its total contribution to $100 million.

This investment matches the $50 million already pledged by the New South Wales Government, ensuring a long-term solution can be delivered.

The project will replace the existing roundabout near the Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) with a signalised intersection. Design options will be presented for community consultation in the coming months. NSW Minister for Roads John Graham described the intersection as “Sydney’s worst roundabout” and acknowledged the frustration for motorists. “Whether it is trying to get to a big event at Olympic Park on time or just getting home from work, this intersection has been a headache,” he said.

The roundabout currently handles nearly 5,000 vehicles per hour during weekday peak periods, and between 2019 and 2023, 41 crashes were reported at the site. Homebush’s population has nearly doubled in the past decade, placing increasing pressure on the road network. Federal Member for Reid Sally Sitou said the upgrade was a long-overdue solution. “This new investment will pave the way for us to deliver the long-term improvements that Homebush Bay Drive needs,” she said.

In December, safety improvements were introduced, including new traffic loop detectors, roundabout operating signs, and advance warning signs on off-ramps. Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said today’s funding commitment would ensure the project finally moves forward after years of delays. “This project was promised for seven years by the Coalition but they never committed the funds that were required,” she said.

With the continued growth of Sydney Olympic Park and surrounding areas, NSW Member for Parramatta Donna Davis emphasised the importance of forward planning. “It’s vital that we get a long-term solution in place, that’s what makes the additional funding from the Federal Government so welcome,” she said.
