Australia’s warehousing market on track for major expansion

Australia’s warehousing and storage sector is set for strong growth over the next decade, with a new report projecting revenue increases.

Australia’s warehousing and storage sector is set for strong growth over the next decade, with a new report from Towards Packaging projecting substantial revenue increases through to 2034.

The report attributes this expansion to the continued rise of e-commerce, advances in automation, and growing demand for temperature-controlled logistics solutions.

In 2024, the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales led the market in terms of share, while Victoria and Tasmania emerged as the fastest-growing regions. Refrigerated warehousing was the dominant segment, highlighting the rising need for cold chain infrastructure to support food, pharmaceutical, and medical goods distribution.

Private warehousing continues to hold a majority position in the market structure, with the food and beverage industry remaining the leading end-user segment. The increasing adoption of shared warehousing is also making storage solutions more flexible and cost-effective for small- and medium-sized enterprises.

The report notes that technology is playing a transformative role. Automation, artificial intelligence, and advanced inventory management systems are improving operational efficiency, accuracy, and throughput. In parallel, operators are placing greater focus on sustainability, incorporating green building designs, renewable energy sources, and energy-efficient equipment into new developments.

As businesses seek faster fulfilment, greater supply chain resilience, and cost-effective storage options, the warehousing sector is becoming a critical component of Australia’s broader logistics landscape.

With ongoing infrastructure investment and rising demand across key industries, the report concludes that Australia’s warehousing and storage market is well-positioned for sustained long-term growth.
