Major milestone for $2 billion freeway upgrade

One of Australia’s busiest roads, the Warringah Freeway, has reached a key milestone with the new Miller Street southbound on-ramp opening to traffic on 25th May 2025.

“The Miller Street on-ramp is a key piece in a series of structures that will open over the next 12 months as the project motors towards the finish line,” said NSW deputy secretary infrastructure projects and engineering, Camilla Drover.

“It is the first piece in a much bigger puzzle, though this new on ramp will not change how motorists use the freeway.

The Warringah Freeway serves as the northern gateway for around 250,000 vehicles per day. The new on-ramp is 200 metres long, 10 metres wide, and has been constructed using 40 pre-cast Super-T girders — concrete structures supporting the ramp — each weighing approximately 48 tonnes.

The $2 billion upgrade will separate general traffic from buses, enabling 3,000 vehicles to avoid merging into bus lanes. Later this year, a new Brook Street on-ramp will connect to the Miller Street ramp to further improve traffic flow.

“In the next year, we will complete the next stage of the design by opening the new Brook Street southbound on ramp to traffic,” Drover added.

The Warringah Freeway upgrade is part of the broader Western Harbour Tunnel project, which aims to improve road connections between Sydney’s north, west and airport precincts. The tunnel is scheduled to open in 2028.
