Victoria’s exporters are set to benefit from increased access to Asian markets, with Hong Kong Airlines announcing a new direct service to Melbourne from December 2025.
The move, part of a broader tourism and trade agreement brokered by the Victorian State Government and Melbourne Airport, includes three direct flights per week between Hong Kong and Melbourne.
“The additional flights will also increase air freight capacity for Victorian exporters sending their products and produce to Asia,” said minister of Economic Growth and Jobs, Danny Pearson.
The deal was secured through State Government’s $7 million Visit Victoria Industry Partnerships Program (VVIP), as part of the Economic Growth Statement which fosters matched investments from industry partners.
Victoria’s Economic Growth Statement is a government strategy outlining over 40 initiatives to boost investment, cut red tape, build workforce skills, and support priority industries for long-term, inclusive economic growth across the state.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus welcomed the announcement and highlighted the importance of airline competition for both passengers and exporters.
“The growth in our international market shows the importance of competition and choice, which is why we are so excited to welcome Hong Kong Airlines to the mix today,” Argus said.
“This new service will not only provide passengers a competitive and high-quality travel option but will also cater to the diverse needs of business and leisure travellers, further deepening the trade, cultural, and tourism ties between Hong Kong and Melbourne,” said president of Hong Kong Airlines, Jeff Sun Jianfeng.
