Australia Post has unveiled plans for a $500 million parcel facility at the former Holden site in Elizabeth – marking its largest-ever investment in South Australia.
Set to open in 2028, the 83,000-square-metre site will be the first fully integrated Australia Post and StarTrack facility and the largest in the network. Designed with world-leading sortation and automation technology, the new Adelaide Parcel Facility will process up to 400,000 parcels daily — double the capacity of the existing Adelaide Airport hub — enabling faster, more efficient deliveries across the state.
Australia Post Group CEO and Managing Director Paul Graham says the investment will position the organisation to meet surging demand driven by eCommerce growth.
“South Australia continues to experience year-on-year eCommerce growth, with 80 per cent of residents shopping online in the past year. This new parcel facility will help us meet that growing demand over the next two decades and deliver to customers’ doors faster than ever before,” Paul says.
“As online shopping habits evolve, it’s critical that Australia Post invests in infrastructure that gives us a competitive advantage. This parcel facility will be the largest in the country and the blueprint for our most technically advanced facilities going forward. It forms part of our long-term strategy to modernise our network, improve efficiency and maintain our role as Australia’s trusted delivery partner, for consumers and businesses alike.”
The project will also serve as a model for future facilities as Australia Post modernises its national network. Developed by the Pelligra Group, the site will target a 5-star Green Star rating and feature advanced on-road sustainability technology. Pelligra Group Chairman Ross Pelligra says the redevelopment will revitalise a site with significant industrial heritage and create a state-of-the-art logistics hub to support local jobs and connectivity.
Once operational, the Elizabeth facility will underpin parcel services for the next 20 years – strengthening Australia Post’s capacity, sustainability credentials, and commitment to keeping South Australians connected.
