A new 2,000-square-metre warehouse in Kewdale is set to significantly boost Western Australia’s food relief network, with SecondBite expanding its capacity to rescue and distribute millions more meals to those in need.
Supported by a $1.2 million Lotterywest grant, the new facility has been fitted out with cold storage infrastructure, racking, office space, and a high-reach forklift—key investments that will enable SecondBite to handle and deliver larger volumes of fresh produce across the state. The organisation estimates the new site will allow it to distribute over 17 million kilograms of food annually, equivalent to around 35 million meals.
The fit-out is part of a broader initiative to reduce food wastage and ensure vulnerable families have consistent access to nutritious food that might otherwise end up in landfill. In addition to the Lotterywest funding, SecondBite also received $500,000 from the Western Australian Government as part of a $1.5 million donation to food relief organisations announced in the recent State Budget.
SecondBite’s State Manager, Lyndon Nilsson, said the expanded capacity would help meet growing demand. “With the fit-out of the new site, we will have the capacity to handle over 17 million kilograms of food, allowing us to distribute a greater volume of essential food items to our network of more than 200 charity partners in WA,” he said.
Community Services Minister Sabine Winton said the government was proud to support the initiative, adding that it would “help SecondBite increase their capacity to provide food relief to Western Australian families doing it tough.”
Located in one of Perth’s key logistics hubs, the Kewdale warehouse strengthens SecondBite’s ability to collect, store, and distribute surplus food efficiently, helping deliver more meals to communities across the state.
