The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has underscored the importance of technology in driving a more productive, efficient, and sustainable freight and logistics sector, following a keynote address by CEO Peter Anderson at WHG’s TechDRIVE Roadshow in Melbourne on 22 October.
Addressing an audience of freight operators, technology providers, and government stakeholders, Anderson highlighted the rapid digital transformation reshaping transport and urged the industry to adopt innovation while addressing long-standing challenges around regulation and workforce sustainability.
“Technology is not just changing how we operate – it’s changing how we think,” Anderson said. “From real-time data to predictive analytics, we now have the tools to make smarter decisions, reduce waste, and improve safety across the board.”
He emphasised that data-driven tools such as telematics and analytics are central to improving freight efficiency, helping operators optimise routes, cut congestion, and enhance service reliability. With freight volumes set to double in the coming decades, Anderson said smarter systems – not more trucks – would be key to managing demand.
Workforce reform also featured heavily in his address. Anderson warned against the rise of exploitative models in the gig economy and stressed the need for fair pay, safe conditions, and stronger safeguards for all transport workers. “We must not allow technology to become a tool for exploitation,” he said.
He also renewed calls for a skills-based, nationally consistent licensing and training framework to attract and prepare the next generation of professional drivers.
Anderson concluded with a reminder of the essential role trucks play in the freight ecosystem: “Ships and trains move freight, but only trucks deliver. With the right technology, regulation, and people, we can ensure our industry remains strong, sustainable, and ready for the future.”
