Woolworths Group has officially opened its new Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Western Sydney, completing a $1.3 billion logistics precinct that represents the retailer’s largest-ever single investment.
The RDC sits alongside the Group’s recently opened National Distribution Centre (NDC) within the Moorebank Logistics Precinct, forming one of Australia’s most advanced freight and fulfilment hubs.
Together, the two automated facilities will move more than five million cartons each week to over 1,000 stores across the country, covering a combined 75,000 square metres – about five times the size of the Sydney Cricket Ground. With direct links to Port Botany, interstate rail and Sydney’s M5 and M7 motorways, the precinct is designed to improve speed-to-shelf, enable a wider product range and reduce freight congestion. The network changes will also remove an estimated 26,000 truck movements from Australian roads each year.
Woolworths Group CEO Amanda Bardwell says the new facilities mark a step-change in the company’s supply chain capability. “This investment is about more than just infrastructure; it is critical for our customers, our team and our future capability,” she says.
“Our customers will benefit from better product availability and convenience, particularly in the run up to the busy Christmas season. We know they want to be able to come in store and find what they need quickly and easily. These new facilities are a game-changer, putting products in stores more efficiently and seamlessly. From weekly specials, to festive favourites, we know we have to have it on shelves or online when customers want it,” Bardwell says.
She notes that automation will “significantly reduce heavy manual handling, which makes a real difference to our team members every single day.”
Both DCs have achieved 5-star Green Star ratings, incorporating 5.3MW rooftop solar generation and rainwater harvesting systems.
