Metcash will invest $12 million to upgrade its Alice Springs Distribution Centre, strengthening food security and supply chain resilience for communities across the Northern Territory.
Announced on 19 November, the project will expand capacity at the site, improve safety standards, and streamline operations to support Metcash employees and ease pressure during peak periods. The DC services more than 400 remote supermarkets and Foodservice & Convenience customers across the NT.
Metcash Food CEO Grant Ramage says the investment is aimed at supporting both local teams and the wider region. “This initiative is more than just an upgrade to our DC. It’s a commitment to the people of Alice Springs and the communities we serve in the Northern Territory,” says Grant. “We’re increasing capacity to ensure reliable access to essential goods, while also investing in facilities to better support our teams at the DC.”
The expanded facility will also help bolster emergency food reserve space in the NT, a need highlighted by recent natural disasters and the COVID period.
Local builder Jaytex Construction has been appointed to deliver the works, with construction expected to begin in December 2025 and conclude by the end of 2026. Jaytex Director and site landlord Brett Dixon says the company has worked closely with Metcash since the early planning stages to ensure the design addresses current operational requirements while providing room for future growth.
“Jaytex has invested significant project funding, partnering with Metcash to drive upgrades that will bring long-term benefits to the region,” Brett says. “We’re excited to move forward and commence works on site, bringing this significant project to life for Alice Springs.”
