The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has reopened the East West rail corridor following the completion of restoration works linked to Tuesday’s train derailment north of Port Pirie.
The reopening enables the full resumption of rail services across key national freight routes, including Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin.
ARTC confirmed the works conclude a 97-hour recovery and reinstatement operation, which involved the removal of derailed wagons and the repair of damaged track infrastructure. The effort was carried out under challenging weather conditions and required significant coordination across multiple crews and specialist resources.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation. ARTC says it will continue working closely with the train operator and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator as inquiries progress.
ARTC also acknowledged the support of Aurizon, which provided additional equipment and crews to assist with the recovery effort.
The East West corridor is one of Australia’s most critical freight rail links, supporting long-haul interstate movements between the east and west coasts as well as north–south services into the Northern Territory.
