Amazon Australia has launched free, in-person tours of its Ravenhall fulfilment centre in Melbourne, offering the public a behind-the-scenes look at how customer orders are processed, packed and dispatched.
Running during the January school holidays, the tours give visitors the opportunity to step inside one of Amazon’s largest Australian logistics facilities. The Ravenhall site spans 37,000 square metres and is almost double the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Led by trained tour guides, visitors are escorted through the operational areas of the facility, where up to 600,000 large items can be stored. These include products such as garden equipment, furniture and flat-screen televisions. The tour explains how Amazon combines advanced technology with manual processes to move orders through the fulfilment centre efficiently, supported by a workforce of around 300 employees.
Wayne Angus, director of Amazon Australia Operations, says the initiative is designed to connect the business more closely with the local community.
“We are excited to be opening our doors in Melbourne and welcoming adults and families into our Ravenhall site,” says Angus. “These tours give Victorians a unique opportunity to see the magic that happens behind the scenes after they click ‘buy now’, and to meet some of the people who make it all happen.”
Angus adds that the tours are intended to be both educational and engaging, particularly for younger visitors. He says the experience aims to spark interest in innovation, technology and logistics, while also providing a free activity for families during the school holiday period.
Tour leader Olivia Adam says the reaction from visitors highlights how little most people see of the logistics processes that support online shopping.
“It’s great to show the local community where we work and how their parcels are prepared every day,” says Adam. “No matter who walks through our doors, they’re amazed by the sheer scale of the site and the way our technology and people work together to get packages out our door and to their doorstep so quickly.”
The Ravenhall tours are free to attend, with bookings required due to limited capacity. Amazon says the program reflects its broader commitment to transparency and community engagement across its Australian operations.
