The Federal Government and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) have announced $4.4 million in new funding to support industry-led initiatives aimed at improving safety across Australia’s heavy vehicle sector.
Delivered through round 11 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), the funding will support projects that strengthen compliance, address emerging safety risks and deliver long-term benefits for the transport and logistics industry.
A key focus of the latest funding round is the use of new and emerging technologies to build capability, improve knowledge and enhance safety outcomes across Australia’s freight and logistics network. Projects that demonstrate innovation, collaboration and practical application are being strongly encouraged.
Organisations eligible to apply include industry associations, local councils, researchers, innovators and businesses, with applicants invited to submit proposals that address current and future safety challenges on Australian roads.
The Albanese Government has already committed more than $45 million to 181 projects across the first ten rounds of the HVSI. Previous projects supported through the program include AI-based fatigue monitoring systems, heavy vehicle safety simulators and a range of industry-led initiatives designed to strengthen internal safety programs.
Assistant Minister for Regional Development Senator Anthony Chisholm says the initiative is focused on preparing the freight and logistics sector for the future.
“When it comes to investing in heavy vehicle safety, our Albanese Labor Government is backing initiatives that prepare Australia’s freight and logistics industry for the future,” says Chisholm.
“Through round 11 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, we’re supporting industry to develop, trial and scale forward-looking solutions that respond to emerging risks, new vehicle technologies and changing road environments.”
NHVR Chief Executive Officer Nicole Rosie says reducing road trauma remains the regulator’s top priority.
“Reducing Australia’s road death toll continues to be the number one priority for the NHVR,” says Rosie. “We can collectively achieve this by building a safer, more connected and innovative industry.”
Submissions for round 11 of the HVSI are now open and close at 5pm AEST on Monday 16 March 2026.
