Major construction is now underway on the Watson Street Interchange Upgrade in Wallan, a project aimed at improving freight access, safety and reliability along a growing section of Melbourne’s northern transport network.
The works will transform Watson Street into a full diamond interchange, delivering a new outbound exit ramp and inbound entry ramp connecting directly to the Hume Freeway. The upgrade is designed to improve access for freight vehicles moving between the freeway, Wallan township and the Wallan East industrial precinct, while supporting broader regional growth.
When complete, the interchange is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety and strengthen connections between the freeway and surrounding employment and industrial areas. The project comes as freight and population growth continue to place pressure on road infrastructure in Melbourne’s north.
Following site investigations, community engagement and establishment of a site compound late last year, crews have begun ground preparation and construction of temporary pavement to keep traffic moving during works. Temporary pavement is being laid on the north side of Watson Street between McCarthy Court and Wallara Waters Boulevard, allowing traffic lanes to shift slightly north while maintaining one lane in each direction.
Additional works include the installation of temporary safety barriers and signage, soil removal, vegetation management and establishment of environmental protection zones, supported by qualified arborists and ecologists. Most activities will take place at night to minimise disruption.
As part of the works, the right-turn lane on the southbound Hume Freeway exit ramp to Watson Street will be closed for up to two weeks. Motorists heading toward Wallan township will be able to make a U-turn at the Wallara Waters roundabout.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King says, “This is a busy area for both locals and freight and once completed this major upgrade will make the intersection safer and less stressful for everyone passing through.”
Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams says, “Starting major construction means we’re getting on with delivering a safer, more efficient interchange that keeps traffic moving while building for Wallan’s future.”
The Watson Street Interchange Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments and is scheduled for completion by late 2027.
