The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has opened applications for the latest round of its Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), with a renewed focus on projects that improve safety outcomes through emerging technology and innovation.
Applications opened on 27 January 2026 and will close on 16 March 2026 at 5pm, with assessments scheduled to run from March to June 2026.
Funding announcements are expected to be made by the Australian Government from July to August 2026.
The NHVR says this year’s program is encouraging submissions that explore new approaches to safety and productivity, including the use of digital tools, data-driven insights, automation, advanced safety systems, and other technologies that could improve how the heavy vehicle industry operates.
Funding is available for projects designed to enhance safety outcomes for heavy vehicle operators and road users, harness new technologies and innovation, build capability and knowledge across the sector, and deliver long-term benefits for Australia’s freight and logistics network.
The regulator is calling for applications from organisations across Australia, including industry associations, local councils, researchers, innovators, and technology-focused businesses, with an emphasis on collaboration between industry, government and the broader community.
The NHVR says the initiative is aimed at unlocking opportunities for safer, smarter and more sustainable heavy vehicle operations, and is seeking future-ready project ideas that can deliver measurable benefits to the sector.
Program guidelines and an application form have been made available to support applicants.
Organisations seeking further information about the program or the application process can contact the NHVR via grants@nhvr.gov.au.
