FedEx has introduced a new reusable packaging system for business-to-business (B2B) shipping, developed in partnership with circular logistics provider Returnity.
The solution is designed to help companies transition from single-use corrugated packaging to durable, reusable containers while continuing to operate within existing parcel networks. The new FedEx-specific box has been engineered to integrate into current handling, automation and transport processes without the additional fees often associated with alternative packaging formats.
Neil Gibson, senior vice president of global customer experience at FedEx, says the initiative aims to simplify reuse for shippers while delivering both operational and environmental benefits.
“In collaboration with Returnity, we have created the first scalable, reusable box solution for B2B customers, which is especially useful for our soft-goods shippers,” says Gibson. “By pairing Returnity’s durable, easy-to-integrate packaging with our global network, we’re helping retailers unlock meaningful cost savings while reducing environmental impact, all without sacrificing speed or reliability.”
The reusable containers are designed for closed-loop logistics environments such as fulfilment-to-store replenishment, internal inventory transfers and field service operations, where the return of packaging can be controlled and managed.
Each box can handle shipments of up to 50 pounds and is designed to complete up to 50 shipping cycles. Under typical operating conditions, FedEx says the system can reduce packaging costs by as much as 30 per cent per shipment cycle while lowering carbon emissions by between 64 and 88 per cent compared with single-use corrugated packaging.
The system has already been piloted with several B2B shippers across North America, where participants reported faster unpacking, improved backroom organisation, increased labour efficiency and lower product damage rates.
While the packaging is currently available to FedEx customers in the United States, the company says international expansion, including into Australia and Europe, is planned for the near future.
