The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) has welcomed new measures announced by National Cabinet aimed at strengthening fuel supply and improving coordination across Australia, describing the move as a positive step for the freight and logistics sector.
NatRoad CEO Warren Clark says the Government’s response reflects a clear understanding of the trucking industry’s role in maintaining national supply chains.
“These are very welcome measures and a clear sign the Government is listening to the concerns of our industry,” he says.
“Ensuring reliable fuel supply is essential, because without trucks, Australia stops.”
Clark says the announcement comes at a critical time for operators navigating ongoing global uncertainty, with improved coordination expected to provide greater confidence across the sector.
“Improving coordination and securing fuel supply gives confidence to operators who are doing it tough right now,” he says.
“At a time like this, stability in the system is incredibly important.”
Despite the positive reception, NatRoad has cautioned that further support will be needed to address persistent financial pressures facing transport businesses.
“These companies still have March’s fuel bill to pay. While these measures are an important step forward, many operators are still facing significant financial pressure on the ground,” Clark says.
“Fuel prices remain high, cash flow is tight, and businesses are working hard to stay on the road.”
NatRoad says complementary measures will be critical to ensure the benefits of the announcement are felt quickly by operators, particularly as cost pressures continue to impact day-to-day operations.
“Passing through fuel costs and stabilising supply are key parts of the solution, but we also need to make sure businesses have the capacity to get through this period,” he says.
NatRoad says it will continue working with government and industry stakeholders to support supply chain resilience and business sustainability.
