The Western Australian Government has announced a series of measures to support the State’s transport and aviation sectors, as rising fuel costs and global supply disruptions continue to impact operations.
Following consultation with industry through the Industry Support Working Group, the Government will provide targeted support to airlines and freight operators aimed at reducing costs and maintaining supply chain resilience.
A key measure includes maintaining fares under the Regional Airfare Zone Cap (RAZC) scheme, with the Government offsetting rising jet fuel costs to ensure regional passengers are not impacted. Additional support will also be provided to airlines operating critical intra-regional routes across northern and regional WA.
On the freight side, a three-month trial will allow 53.5-metre triple-trailer road trains to travel further south along Great Northern Highway, between Wubin and Muchea. The change is expected to improve freight efficiency by enabling larger loads to move closer to Perth without requiring reconfiguration.
The Government says the trial will help reduce truck movements, improve productivity and lower fuel consumption across key freight corridors connecting Perth to the Wheatbelt, Pilbara and Kimberley regions.
The initiative builds on earlier reforms allowing certain road trains to carry additional loads of fuel and fertiliser, further supporting supply into priority regions.
Premier Roger Cook says the measures are designed to ease cost pressures while maintaining essential supply chains.
“We will continue to work with the transport industry to support their operations and help maintain WA’s supply chain resilience,” says Roger.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says the Government will continue working with industry to identify further efficiencies.
“We’ve listened to freight industry leaders and acted quickly to roll out practical changes that improve productivity and fuel efficiency across our State’s supply chain,” says Rita.
The Government is also continuing discussions with industry on longer-term initiatives, including the adoption of electric trucks and further operational efficiencies.
