The Federal and Western Australian State Governments have committed $1.1 billion to strengthen freight connections to the proposed Westport container terminal in Kwinana, supporting long-term supply chain capacity and trade growth.
The investment includes $552 million from the Federal Government, matched by the State Government, to fund the first stage of upgrades to Anketell Road. Works will include widening the road to four lanes between Leath Road and Abercrombie Road, as well as a grade separation at Rockingham Road.
The Federal Government says the project will unlock long-term economic benefits and improve national supply chain resilience.
“In uncertain times, Australians can be assured we are getting on with the job of delivering landmark projects that will unlock long term social and economic benefits for Australians,” the Federal Government says.
“Upgrading Anketell Road will ensure Western Australia’s trade capacity can realise its potential.”
The State Government says the upgrades are critical to supporting the future port precinct and broader industrial growth.
“Upgrading Anketell Road will help deliver this once-in-a-century economic infrastructure for WA,” the State Government says.
“It will ensure our State has what it needs to meet priorities, including becoming a renewable energy superpower and a place that makes more things here.”
Anketell Road is expected to become a key freight corridor linking the Kwinana Freeway to the future Westport precinct, improving efficiency and diverting heavy vehicle traffic away from residential areas.
Additional funding includes $350 million for upgrades to the Kwinana Freeway and $117.9 million from the State Government for planning, land acquisition, and program delivery.
The project is expected to increase freight throughput, reduce congestion, and support long-term development across the Western Trade Coast.
