Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has linked Western Sydney International Airport, Moorebank Intermodal and Australia’s strategic maritime capability to the future of national freight resilience and economic growth.
Speaking at the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue, the Prime Minister said the new airport would be a major driver of jobs, investment and connectivity for the region, particularly through its relationship with Bradfield.
“It makes absolute sense to connect up Macarthur with not just with the airport, but importantly with the high-quality jobs that will be there at Bradfield,” he says.
Albanese also pointed to Moorebank Intermodal as an example of long-term infrastructure planning delivering freight benefits.
“One of the things that gives me enormous satisfaction is Moorebank Intermodal going and seeing how well it’s operating,” he says. “The airport here will be fantastic, and it’s right that it is the first airport for Western Sydney, rather than just a second… add-on of Mascot.”
The Prime Minister said Western Sydney International would become “the best airport in Australia when it opens” and predicted its economic impact would exceed expectations.
He also identified Moorebank, Western Sydney International, a strategic maritime fleet and high-speed rail as four major national infrastructure priorities connected to Australia’s economic and supply chain capability.
Referencing recent disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, Albanese said Australia needed greater domestic maritime capacity to support sovereignty and resilience.
“We’ve seen what happens with maritime… we need a domestic capacity,” he says.
The comments come as Western Sydney continues to attract major logistics, freight, manufacturing and infrastructure investment ahead of the airport’s opening.
