Futuristic technology meets today’s logistics at Queensland Materials Handling

Safety, training, licensing and integration technology will be among the attractions at Queensland Materials Handling when it runs from 21 to 23 June. Focused on lift, shift and load, the event will be held concurrently with the Queensland Safety Show and the new Queensland Manufacturing Show at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.


Visitors will learn about the very topical changes to forklift licensing under the new work health and safety laws at special workshops presented by AIMM Industrial Training on the first and final days of Queensland Materials Handling.


Matching the advice is an extensive range of practical products and services from materials and manual handling specialists. Among them is dock automation software from Leda Security that allows logistics centres to book and manage trucks much like airport traffic control.


If the truck and door is fitted with RFID, ‘Dockbrain’ permits truck entry within the specified visiting window and only at the nominated door to alleviate queuing. For enhanced workplace safety, Dockbrain can manage opening and closing of equipment in sequence. Leda Security’s Tom Rozsa says Dockbrain’s launch at Melbourne Materials Handling surprised many visitors.


“The interest from Melbourne Materials Handling visitors in Dockbrain was huge,” he says.


“Many commented that they hadn’t been aware we’ve extended our capabilities in this way, so the show was the right platform for the launch and to get the message across that Leda Security offers dock levellers, high-speed doors, insulated doors and the automation that coordinates all the equipment to make it work.”


An integrated approach to safety will also be promoted by ShockWatch Australia. Its EquipCommand software brings together data from impact, tilt and shock sensors so managers can monitor daily activities and meet long-term objectives for all equipment and operators across multiple facilities. Businesses can use this comprehensive software program to monitor equipment access, utilisation, safety, and maintenance for optimal fleet performance.


Complementing the vehicle safety technology will be a range of suppliers offering drug and alcohol testing services, which Queensland Materials Handling organiser, Marie Kinsella of Australian Exhibitions & Conferences, says is an emerging field.


"It seems employers are becoming more and more aware that training is only part of the answer when it comes to high risk activities like forklift operation," she says.


"Increasingly, they are looking for technology that can help prevent workplace injuries. Drug and alcohol testing, coupled with vehicle monitoring systems are great examples that have recently risen to prominence at the Queensland Safety and Materials Handling Shows."

Brisbane Truck Show signs on a legend

Rugby league legend Shane Webcke has been appointed official ambassador for the 2011 Brisbane Truck Show.


Webcke, veteran of 21 State of Origins and 263 first-grade games for the Brisbane Broncos, will become the ‘public face’ in all print, radio and television commercials and pre-show promotional events for the biennial Brisbane Truck Show.


The Brisbane Truck Show is owned and run by the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Queensland (CVIAQ), and with a 40-plus year history it now ranks as the Southern Hemisphere’s premier commercial vehicle event.


Brett Wright, chief executive of the CVIAQ, says the first-time appointment of a show ambassador was driven by the need to communicate the move to a new venue and the fresh focus on a transport-only event.


After many years at Brisbane’s RNA showground, the 2011 show will be staged at the world-class Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.


“It is a very important, very exciting move for us and we needed someone who we could entrust that message to and Shane became the obvious choice for us as show ambassador,” Wright added.


“His high public profile, both through sport and now as a TV presenter together with the fact that Webcke is involved in the transport industry, makes him a powerful advocate for the event.”


Shane has a direct interest in the transport industry through his part-ownership of a small transport haulage business. The company specialises in a range of services such as stock and grain carrying, general haulage and deliveries of landscaping materials. In addition, Shane Webcke has other business interests in earthmoving and general haulage services across greater Brisbane.


“Shane stood out because he is very well respected in all aspects of his life, not just football; he is a very competent speaker, he is an intelligent man, and he has real experience in our industry,” Wright says.


“He is a Queensland statesman. That was what the CVIAQ was looking for and Shane fits the bill perfectly.”


Webcke, a dual premiership player and Dally M Prop of the Year, says the ambassador role represents a ‘dream job’.


“Growing up on a farm around machinery and trucks, I’ve always loved that sort of thing. I’m involved in television and promotional work at the moment, but part of my strategy in moving forward with my life is to also have other business interests, and machinery, and especially trucks, will definitely be part of that,” he says.


“I attended the show two years ago and know first-hand how good it is, so when I was asked the decision was easy for me. From my point of view it is a dream job as it involves what I love.


“I’m thrilled to be involved and thrilled to be asked.”

NMW aims to help counter manufacturing contraction

Responding to the continued retraction in the manufacturing sector, the organisers of National Manufacturing Week (NMW) are working to further expand NMW 2011’s profile. Plans for the event include co-located shows, an expanded seminar program and solid marketing strategy.

ALC Forum hits the spot, big plans for 2012

Nearly 300 people gathered in Melbourne on 21-22 February for the 2011 ALC Forum, with the theme of Freight Networks for the Future.


Through the history of the movement of freight in Australia there has never been a more important time to ensure our supply chains are safe, efficient, reliable, sustainable and internationally competitive.


Through good infrastructure decisions and the introduction of correct new national legislation, the ALC Forum provides one way in which the industry can come together to discuss and articulate the views that all governments need to hear and act upon.


The purpose of the Annual Forum is to transfer information and exchange ideas at all levels and across all modes.


ALC assembled the leaders of our industry- as well as government and union representatives, to articulate their views on what is being done and what needs to be done in building our future freight networks.


ALC chairman Don Telford said: “My own experience in this industry has been across most aspects of the freight transport and logistics chain – road and rail transport, shipping, stevedoring and warehousing.

OHS harmonisation – from the Act to the codes at Safety In Action

Just as public comment closes for a new set of draft workplace health and safety regulations and codes of practice, experts at the Safety In Action trade show will explain the changes and what they mean for Australian workplaces.


Free seminars by Safe Work Australia and the Norton Rose law firm on each of the show's three days at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from April 5 to 7 will also help employers come to grips with the harmonised work health and safety Act due for implementation at the end of the year.


Safe Work Australia has released draft regulations and a dozen draft model codes for public comment, which closes on April 4. Announcing a series of seminars at Safety In Action hosted by expert exhibitors including the Australian Industry Group, show organiser Marie Kinsella said it was important to assist employers prepare for a new regulatory regime.


"At the Harmonisation Master Classes, Safety In Action visitors will learn about the proposed changes and how to comply," she said. "The regulations and codes of practice tell us exactly how to make our workplaces safe so, in many ways, they're even more important to understand in detail than the Act."


Five Harmonisation Master Classes have been confirmed. The Australian Industry Group will discuss the new regulations, while other exhibitors examine four draft Codes of Practice. Risk Management Technologies will deal with the draft Code of Practice for the Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals; Noise Management Services will explain Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work; Carter Corporation will discuss How to Manage and Control Asbestos in the Workplace; while ATTAR examines Managing the Work Environment & Facilities.


The seminars addressing the Codes of Practice and the Act will be run daily at Safety In Action from April 5 to 7 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The 45-minute classes are free and bookings are highly recommended.

2011 ITS Summit to plan transport safety and productivity improvement

The applications of intelligent transport systems (ITS), ranging from freight management to in-vehicle navigation and road tolling technologies in Australia, have evolved from technical mysteries to productive networks contributing to the safety, security and productivity of the nation's transport infrastructure.


Intelligent Transport Systems Australia (ITS Australia) president Dr Norm Pidgeon said these technologies are not just talking maps stuck on the car's dashboard.


"Intelligent transport systems are now used to keep public transport on schedule, track freight deliveries and manage peak time traffic flow," said Norm Pidgeon.


"As ITS technologies quietly perform a wide range of tasks on our transport infrastructure, they make dramatic improvements to the safety and security of pedestrians, passengers and vehicle drivers. They also make significant improvements to transport productivity. People and goods get to their destinations faster and more economically thanks to Australian developed ITS solutions," he said.


All of this has been achieved in the past 10 to 15 years. ITS industry thought leaders believe it is now appropriate to examine progress and they have called the second Australian Intelligent Transport Systems Summit, to be held from 20 to 22 September, 2011 on the Gold Coast, to progress industry input to a strategy for national ITS development.


Like the inaugural summit in 2009, the ITS 2011 Summit will be a roll-up the sleeves working session with the theme ‘Strategy into Action’. It will bring together all ITS stakeholders – the entrepreneurs, the manufacturers and the users, including vehicle and component manufacturers, transport businesses and government bodies responsible for transport infrastructure.


National ITS strategy objective


"As we continue to align technology standards among ITS producers, and apply identical technical regulations across Australia's state and territory borders, we will bring even greater safety, security and productivity benefits to the nation's transport infrastructure," said Mr Pidgeon.


"With significant input from the internationally renowned ITS pioneers speaking at the ITS 2011 Summit, this meeting will share experiences about the development and implementation of major projects. This will benefit future applications by enabling synergies across projects to be identified and capitalised upon, and will reveal potential overlaps to be avoided," he said.


Keynote speakers from Australia, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Korea, Norway, South Africa, United Kingdom, and United States of America will inspire debate over two days, including a full day workshop leading to the summit objective of capturing industry input to a strategy for national ITS development.


That strategy will cover transport operations, vehicle and freight technologies, traveller information, a national ITS architecture, and the roles of academia, industry and government. ITS Australia is committed to working with Austroads and other stakeholders to deliver an integrated national strategy.

Norm Pidgeon said Australia is an internationally recognised intelligent transport systems innovator. "We export sophisticated electronic technology, including navigation and electronic enforcement systems. As a nation, we can do better in applying our skills and experience to improving our own transport infrastructure," he said.


"The ITS 2011 Summit is our most ambitious project. The summit outcomes will help set the national agenda for the development of technologies to further improve the safety, security and economic performance of Australia's transport infrastructure for the coming decade.
